Background

The Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service is proposing to increase from $0.35 to $0.41 per thousand board feet the assessment imposed on softwood lumber imported into or shipped within the U.S. Importers that import less than 15 million board feet annually, exports of softwood lumber from the U.S., and shipments and imports of organic softwood lumber would continue to be exempt from this fee. Comments on this proposal are due no later than Oct. 13.

AMS notes that the existing fee has been in place since 2011 and that the additional funds generated by this increase would support new programs that would help maintain and expand markets for softwood lumber.
