Background

Imports of textiles and apparel tumbled again in November but were still higher than a year earlier, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 6.98 billion square meter equivalents in November, down 13.1 percent from October but up 1.5 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 5.33 billion SME, down 11.2 percent for the month but up 3.5 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 1.65 billion SME were down 18.7 percent from October and 4.7 percent from a year before.

Imports of textiles and apparel were 85.9 billion SME for the year to date in November, down 13.8 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports were 63.3 billion SME, down 10.1 percent, while apparel imports fell 22.7 percent to 22.5 billion SME.

For the year ending in November, total imports were down 15.3 percent to 92.0 million SME. Textile imports fell 12.2 percent to 67.6 billion SME while apparel imports fell 22.7 percent to 24.5 billion SME.
