Background

Imports of textiles and apparel rose in February and were up significantly from a year earlier, according to statistics from the Department of Commerce’s Office of Textiles and Apparel.

Overall Imports. Textile and apparel imports totaled 7.44 billion square meter equivalents in February, up 10.7 percent from January and 28.8 percent from a year earlier. Textile imports totaled 5.39 billion SME, up 14.0 percent for the month and 36.1 percent from the previous year, while apparel imports of 2.04 billion SME were up 2.5 percent from January and 12.9 percent from a year before.

Imports of textiles and apparel were 14.1 billion SME for the year to date in February, up 12.5 percent from the previous year. Textile imports were 10.1 billion SME, up 17.4 percent, while apparel imports totaled 4.03 billion SME, up 1.7 percent.

For the year ending in February 2024, total imports were down 7.2 percent compared to a year earlier, to 94.3 billion SME. Textile imports fell 2.7 percent to 69.9 billion SME while apparel imports plunged 18.1 percent to 24.4 billion SME.
